There are few places that feel more meaningful for a proposal than somewhere that already holds a special place in your relationship. For Laurent and Elizabeth, that place was Glacier Point. Their Glacier Point proposal in Yosemite National Park was filled with so much intention, thought, and heart. With panoramic views of Half Dome, Yosemite Valley, and the surrounding Sierra Nevada, it's an incredible place to ask the love of your life to spend forever with you.
Laurent's proposal to Elizabeth was about so much more than finding a beautiful view. This proposal was filled with so much intention, thought, and heart. Every detail was planned with Elizabeth in mind, from choosing a place that already held meaning in their relationship to the surprise picnic waiting after she said yes. Here’s a peek!
Why Glacier Point Was the Perfect Proposal Location
Yosemite National Park already held a special place in Laurent and Elizabeth's relationship, so choosing Glacier Point wasn't simply about the scenery. It was about returning to a place that already meant something to them and beginning a new chapter there.
That's one of my favorite things about photographing proposals. The location doesn't have to be the most impressive place in the world just because it looks good in photographs. When it has meaning behind it, the entire experience feels different.
From our very first emails, I could tell how much Laurent adored Elizabeth. Every question he asked and every detail we planned revolved around making the experience feel special for her. As a Yosemite proposal photographer, getting to help someone plan a moment like this from behind the scenes is such a special part of what I do.
Planning a Glacier Point Sunset Proposal
Laurent and I worked together and carefully planned the details so the proposal would feel intimate and natural without raising any suspicion. Laurent prepared a beautiful picnic overlooking Half Dome with a bottle of champagne and a charcuterie board he had thoughtfully put together himself. It was especially meaningful because every detail reflected how well he knew her.
Once everything was ready, they walked toward the overlook. To keep the surprise alive, Laurent casually suggested taking a few photos together. As Elizabeth admired the view, Laurent glanced back at me. I gave him the cue, and he dropped to one knee. With Half Dome glowing behind them in the golden light, he asked Elizabeth to marry him and she immediately burst into tears. And, of course, she said yes!
Don't Rush the Moment After the Proposal
One of my favorite parts of this proposal wasn't actually the proposal itself, although it was great! It was everything that happened afterward. Instead of immediately jumping into portraits, Laurent and Elizabeth took time to celebrate together. They popped a bottle of champagne, shared the charcuterie board, laughed, hugged, and simply soaked in the fact that they were engaged. They took the time to really soak in the moment.
This is something I think is really important when planning a proposal or engagement session. When people reach out saying they want a quick session or just a few photos, it can be harder to create the space for moments like this. The photographs matter, of course. But you also want to remember what it felt like to actually become engaged.
My top tip is to give yourselves time to celebrate. Sit down together, open the champagne, eat the snacks, or just take a breath. Those are often the moments you'll remember most!
Golden Hour at Glacier Point
Golden hour at Glacier Point is absolutely magical, but it also requires careful planning. The light changes quickly, and if you want Half Dome and the surrounding mountains beautifully illuminated, timing matters. Arriving too early or too late can completely change the look of your photographs.
That evening, the conditions couldn't have been more perfect. Warm golden light filled the valley while the granite cliffs glowed behind them. The entire landscape seemed to light up as the sun dropped lower. It was gorgeous!
This is one of the reasons I recommend working with someone who knows Yosemite well when you're planning a Glacier Point proposal. There's more to the timing than simply showing up for sunset. We need to think about the light, crowds, travel time, and where you want to be when the sun hits the landscape just right.
Glacier Point Proposal Portraits
After celebrating with champagne, we wandered around Glacier Point for portraits. Nothing with Laurent and Elizabeth felt forced. They laughed together, held hands, admired the views, and simply enjoyed being engaged.
Some of my favorite photographs happen during moments like these, when couples stop thinking about the camera and simply enjoy being together. I'll always give you direction when you need it, but I also want there to be plenty of space for you to just be yourselves. The entire evening felt less like work and more like spending time with new friends, which is always my goal!
A Small Gesture I'll Never Forget
One moment that will always stay with me happened during their picnic. As Laurent and Elizabeth poured themselves a glass of champagne, they poured one for me too. It may seem like a small gesture, but it meant so much!
I'm there to document one of the biggest moments of a couple's life, but I'm also being invited into an incredibly personal experience. Getting to witness the surprise, the tears, the celebration, and all of the little moments in between is something I never take for granted. Those little gestures of kindness never go unnoticed!
