A Whimsical Five-Year Vow Renewal in Sequoia National Park | Patti & Luke
A five-year anniversary is a pretty special milestone, and Patti and Luke decided to celebrate theirs with a sunrise vow renewal in Sequoia National Park. Patti reached out because she wanted to document this chapter of their marriage with photos that felt true to who they are now.
Before their session, Patti let me in on a little secret. She had chosen a new wedding band for Luke and had written him a special letter to read when she gave it to him. She had put so much thought into both, and she wanted the moment to be a surprise. We just had to find the right time to make it happen!

Sunrise Among the Giant Sequoias
We started their morning at the General Sherman Tree at sunrise. Having this iconic part of Sequoia National Park almost entirely to yourself is pretty rare, but somehow, we got incredibly lucky. So, of course, we took full advantage of it!
After spending some time around General Sherman, we started our hike along Congress Trail. We stopped for photos beneath the giant sequoias and whenever the morning light came through the trees in a way I couldn't resist. We only saw about three other people during the entire hike.
Imagine walking through Congress Trail with almost no one around. That is exactly how this morning felt. The forest was quiet, the light was soft, and Patti and Luke had so much space to simply enjoy being together.
It was also the perfect setting for the ethereal, whimsical feeling Patti had envisioned for their anniversary photos. Her deep teal dress stood out against the green forest and warm red tones of the sequoias, while the early morning light filtered through the branches above them. Everything came together so naturally.
A Surprise Five Years in the Making
Eventually, it was time for Patti's surprise. I gave her the cue, and she gave Luke his new wedding band and the letter she had written for him. They both became emotional almost immediately.
It was such a genuine moment to witness because there was no audience and no pressure to perform for the camera. It was simply Patti and Luke, five years into their marriage, exchanging something meaningful beneath some of the largest trees in the world.
And that's one of my favorite things about anniversary sessions. You don't have to recreate your wedding day to celebrate your marriage. You can create something that feels like where you are now!
For Patti and Luke, that meant returning to the promises they made five years earlier and celebrating how much their relationship had grown since then. The new ring and letter made the morning personal, but the entire experience gave them time to slow down and enjoy their anniversary together.
Why Sunrise Is Worth It in Sequoia National Park
For a Sequoia National Park vow renewal or anniversary session, I will almost always encourage couples to consider sunrise. Sequoia gets much busier as the day goes on, especially around popular locations like the General Sherman Tree and Congress Trail. Starting early gave us room to explore without constantly waiting for people to move out of the background.
The light is another huge reason I love sunrise in the park. Early morning light is softer than the harsher light you often get in the middle of the day. As the sun comes up, it filters through the branches and creates a gentle glow between the trees. For Patti's ethereal vision, it couldn't have been a better fit.
Sunrise can also be especially nice for summer sessions. Mornings are cooler, which makes hiking and exploring much more comfortable before the afternoon heat arrives. Parking can be easier, trails are quieter, and you have more privacy for the moments that matter.
That last part is especially important for an anniversary session or vow renewal. If you want to exchange letters, give your partner a meaningful gift, revisit your vows, or simply have a private moment together, starting early gives you more space to do that without an audience.
And once your session is over, you still have the whole day ahead of you. You could grab breakfast, explore more of Sequoia, have a picnic, or head back to your lodging to relax and celebrate together. Your photos become part of a larger anniversary experience instead of the only thing you did that day.
