Rainy Yosemite Proposal and Cathedral Beach Engagement Photos
Some sessions just stay with you, and Max and Claire’s Yosemite proposal was definitely one of them! As a Yosemite engagement photographer, getting to help plan this surprise proposal and photograph their Cathedral Beach engagement photos afterward was such an honor. From the rainy weather to the emotional reactions throughout the day, everything about this session felt meaningful and genuine.
The forecast called for rain all day long, which usually makes couples nervous when they’re planning a proposal in Yosemite National Park. But honestly, the weather is part of the experience here. Yosemite changes constantly depending on the season and conditions, and sometimes the days that look “bad” on paper end up feeling the most magical in person. That ended up being exactly the case for Max and Claire!
Planning a Surprise Yosemite Proposal
This proposal was completely planned as a surprise for Claire. Max had never visited Yosemite before, so I wanted to help make the experience feel exciting and stress free from the very beginning. He knew he wanted classic Yosemite scenery with green meadows, waterfalls, and mountain views, so we built the plan around locations that would give them all of that while still feeling personal and relaxed.
One of my favorite parts of my job is getting to show people Yosemite for the first time! There’s something really special about watching someone experience these places in person after only seeing them online or in photos before.
Even with the rain moving through the park all morning, Yosemite still looked incredible. The meadows were bright green, the waterfalls were flowing heavily, and the clouds hung low around the cliffs in a really pretty way.
A Rainy Proposal at Cook’s Meadow
The proposal took place at Cook’s Meadow surrounded by misty views and soft rain. Honestly, the weather made everything feel even more emotional. The entire park felt calm and quiet, which gave them space to really stay present together.
Claire’s reaction was so sweet to witness! She was emotional from the second she realized what was happening, and you could tell how excited she was for the rest of the session too. They definitely balanced each other out in the best way. Claire brought so much energy and emotion to the day while Max felt completely grounded and calm beside her. You could genuinely feel how much they loved each other in every moment!
Cathedral Beach Engagement Photos in Yosemite
After the proposal, we headed over to Cathedral Beach for the engagement session portion of the day. These Cathedral Beach engagement photos ended up being some of my favorites from the entire session!
Cathedral Beach is honestly one of the best locations in Yosemite for engagement photos. You get views of El Capitan towering above the Merced River while still having space to enjoy the scenery without feeling surrounded by crowds.
One thing I really love about Cathedral Beach is how immersive it feels. You are not just standing at an overlook taking photos for a few minutes. You actually feel surrounded by Yosemite.
Some of my favorite moments from my time with Max and Claire was when they completely forgot about the camera! They were laughing nonstop, holding onto each other to stay dry, and just enjoying being there together.
Why Rainy Yosemite Sessions Can Be So Beautiful
A lot of people assume rain ruins a proposal or engagement session, but I actually think it can add so much to the experience when couples embrace it. You can’t control the weather in a national park. The best thing you can do is prepare for it, stay flexible, and lean into whatever the day gives you.
That mindset completely changed the experience for Max and Claire. Instead of stressing about it, they stayed excited the entire time. We even joked that Yosemite looked like something straight out of Twilight with all the fog and rain moving through the trees!
