A Full-Day Sequoia National Park Adventure with a Lost Grove Elopement Ceremony

If you're dreaming of a Lost Grove elopement ceremony, Leah and Kurt's wedding day is the perfect example of how much you can experience when you give yourselves the time to truly enjoy Sequoia National Park. Rather than planning a quick ceremony and heading home, they built a full-day adventure around the things they love most. They explored together, hiked beneath the giant sequoias, and slowed down enough to soak in every moment. As a Sequoia elopement photographer, days like this are exactly why I love photographing elopements in the park!

Starting the Day with a Sunrise First Look

We started the morning with a sunrise first look in one of Sequoia's beautiful groves. The anticipation and excitement leading up to this moment were written all over their faces. I got Kurt into position, walked Leah through where she would come from, and then stepped back to let everything happen naturally while I documented every second.

One of my favorite details from the morning was completely unplanned. Leah had chosen Kurt's tie herself because the pattern matched her dress almost perfectly. Kurt thought it was super sweet! It was such a thoughtful little detail that made their wedding attire feel even more personal.

Leah also chose a lightweight wedding dress because she knew they wanted to spend part of their wedding day hiking. It was the perfect reminder that your wedding attire can be both beautiful and practical when you're planning an adventure elopement.

An Unexpected Stop Before Their Lost Grove Elopement Ceremony

On the drive to their ceremony, I happened to glance out the window and spotted a meadow bursting with wildflowers. Because I knew it was wildflower season, I had been keeping an eye out for blooms like this. We made a quick detour, and it ended up being one of my favorite parts of the day. The sunlight filtered through the sequoias while the flowers glowed beneath them, creating some incredibly magical portraits.

We made sure to stay on the trail the entire time. Walking into the meadow is prohibited, so it was important to enjoy the scenery while respecting the park and protecting the wildflowers.

Moments like this are one of the reasons I love elopements so much! Even though we had a timeline, Leah and Kurt were in control of their day. We had the flexibility to stop, enjoy something unexpected, and then continue on our way without worrying about running behind.

It's also one of the biggest benefits of working with a local photographer. Knowing when the wildflowers bloom and where to find them meant we could take advantage of a moment that wasn't even originally part of the plan.

Their Lost Grove Elopement Ceremony

Their Lost Grove elopement ceremony took place at Lost Grove Turnout, one of the designated ceremony locations in Sequoia National Park. Everything came together perfectly. The lighting was beautiful, the giant sequoias surrounded the ceremony site, and we even had a deer that stayed nearby for almost the entire ceremony. We joked that it was their guest of honor!

Since we arrived a little early, I spent some time photographing the details that told the story of their day. Their rings, bouquet, hiking boots, a Sequoia map, and a custom engraved perfume all became part of the story. I always love documenting the little things because they're often the details that immediately bring couples back to how their wedding day felt.

Champagne, Cake, and a Break at Halstead Meadow

After their ceremony, we drove to Halstead Meadow for a champagne toast and cake cutting before beginning the hiking portion of the day. This stop ended up being one of my favorite parts of the timeline because it gave them a chance to simply enjoy being married.

They shared cake, popped champagne, changed into their hiking boots in the back of the car, and took a much-needed break before heading out on the trail. Since it was a hot July day, making time to rest, eat, and hydrate was just as important as anything else we had planned.

Halstead Meadow was incredibly green and full of summer blooms. It honestly looked like something straight out of a movie. It's another ceremony location I would absolutely recommend for couples wanting a peaceful setting in Sequoia.

Hiking the Congress Trail

Once they had recharged, we headed to the Congress Trail for the final adventure of the day. Anyone familiar with Sequoia knows parking near the Sherman Tree can be unpredictable during the summer, so we were thrilled to find a great parking spot that made getting to the trail easy.

We spent the afternoon hiking, stopping throughout the trail for photos and taking time to appreciate the giant sequoias around us. July is one of my favorite times to photograph in the park because the lupine is often in full bloom, and this day was no exception.

One of my favorite little details was the "Just Married" signs attached to their backpacks. Throughout the hike, other visitors kept congratulating them as they passed by, making the entire experience feel even more special.

One of my favorite things about Leah and Kurt's wedding day is that nothing felt rushed. Because they chose a full-day elopement, they had time for everything that mattered to them. They experienced a sunrise first look, exchanged vows beneath the giant sequoias during their Lost Grove elopement ceremony, enjoyed champagne and cake together, and ended the day hiking one of Sequoia's most beautiful trails.

Instead of feeling like they had to squeeze everything into a few short hours, they were able to fully experience the park and build a wedding day around what they genuinely love doing together.
