Where Is Lake Tahoe?

Lake Tahoe is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains along the California and Nevada border. It’s one of the easiest adventure elopement destinations to travel to. Couples can fly into nearby airports, rent a car, and be surrounded by incredible mountain scenery within a short drive.

One important thing to know is that your ceremony location determines which marriage license you need. If your ceremony takes place on the California side of Lake Tahoe, you’ll need a California marriage license. If your ceremony takes place on the Nevada side, you’ll need a Nevada marriage license.

Both sides of Lake Tahoe offer incredible scenery, but they each have a different feel. Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO)

Reno-Tahoe International Airport is the closest major airport and is approximately 45–75 minutes from Lake Tahoe depending on where you’re staying.

Sacramento International Airport (SMF)

Sacramento International Airport is about 2 hours away and often offers more nonstop flight options.

Having a rental car is highly recommended for a Lake Tahoe elopement. The best locations are spread throughout the area, and having your own transportation allows you to explore without being tied to a schedule.

How to Legally Elope in Lake Tahoe

The legal steps for your Lake Tahoe elopement depend on which side of the lake you choose for your ceremony.

Decide Which State You’ll Get Married In

Your marriage license must come from the state where your legal ceremony takes place. You can absolutely explore both California and Nevada during your wedding day, but the ceremony location determines which license you’ll need.

Apply through any California County Clerk’s Office
Valid anywhere in California

One witness required unless using a confidential marriage license

Nevada Marriage License

Apply through any Nevada County Marriage License Bureau
