El Capitan Meadow Photo Session in Yosemite National Park
Some sessions feel less like work and more like spending time with old friends. That was exactly the case with Ivey and Andrew’s El Capitan Meadow photo session in Yosemite National Park! As a Yosemite photographer, I always feel grateful when couples trust me not only with their photos, but with their first experience seeing a place like Yosemite.
Ivey and Andrew traveled all the way from Alabama to visit Yosemite for the very first time. Yosemite had been on their bucket list for years, so getting to show them around the park and photograph this season of their life felt really special.
Spring in Yosemite National Park
We met during one of the best times of year. May is truly prime season in the park. The waterfalls are full, the meadows are bright green, and the heavy summer crowds have not fully arrived yet.
There is a certain balance in Yosemite during spring that feels really peaceful. You get dramatic water flow from the melting snow, but still enough space to slow down and enjoy each location without feeling rushed. I’m so glad that Ivey and Andrew got to experience that version of Yosemite!
El Capitan Meadow Photo Session
Our main stop for the day was El Capitan Meadow for their photo session. This area is one of the most iconic views in Yosemite Valley, and it never gets old no matter how many times you see it.
During spring, the meadow feels especially alive. The grass is green, the Merced River is flowing strong, and El Capitan stands tall in the background like something out of a painting.
This El Capitan Meadow photo session felt playful, relaxed, and very go with the flow. We walked slowly through the meadow, stopped whenever the light felt right, and didn’t force anything. That approach always works well here. Yosemite has a way of shaping the pace of the day if you let it.
There is a certain view from El Capitan Meadow that feels almost unreal in person. It looks like something you would only see in photos until you are actually standing there. The scale of the cliffs and the openness of the valley creates a feeling that is hard to describe. It is less about the visual itself and more about how it makes you feel in the moment!
A Stop at Tunnel View
Later in the session, we made our way to Tunnel View. This is one of those Yosemite viewpoints that people dream about seeing in real life. Even if you have seen it in photos a hundred times, nothing really prepares you for standing there in person. The first time you see it, it feels familiar and brand new at the same time.
For Ivey and Andrew, it was one of those ah-ha moments. I made sure to not rush our time there so that they had a moment to really take it all in. That is something I love about working in Yosemite… it’s not just about the photos. It is about giving people time to actually experience the places they came so far to see.
A Shared Love for National Parks
One of my favorite parts of this session was how much we connected over national parks and hiking. We talked about future road trips, favorite places we have been, and trails we still want to explore.
At one point we even joked about meeting up again just to go on a hike for fun next time they are back in California. That is the kind of connection that makes this work so meaningful, and Yosemite has a way of bringing people together like that. It makes conversations easier and experiences more memorable!
